A flicker in the corner of her eye. A silver blur of raw power, danger
and pure death combined in one long streak of speed beyond imagination.
The deer's nervous system kicks into life in less than half a second, spurring leg muscles into lightning action. From gentle grazing to terrified flight in the blink of an eye.
The wolf fixes his prey with a stare of incredible intensity as his sleek body streaks over the frozen ground, sending up plumes of snow in clouds, duplicating those made by his pumping lungs. His legs are a grey confusion beneath his undulating body. Head low, ears back, tongue lolling.
She knows that this is the final chase. The predator too close, the prey too slow. Her brain thrills with the iminence of death, urging her faster and faster to escape the slavering jaws. To her escape is life, to him it is sure death in the freezing wasteland. Nature's everlasting decision; to kill or be killed.
He keeps his distance, waiting for the inevitable. Soon she will collapse or trip. Although the wolf cannot match her speed, his stamina is unfathomable. The deer knows her only chance is a sprint for life itself.
Narrow hooves crunching the snow, massive paws whispering behind. Exhaustion taking over her mind, allowing her limbs to stiffen with fatigue, slowing. A corner of her mind urging the remainder to give in, to admit defeat to the ivory fangs. A longing for the final peace.
A sharp stab of pain, tumbling. Clouds of sparkling crystals. Sky, ground, sky, ground. Then just the purest blue of the arctic air. Perhaps three seconds of peace and tranquility. A feeling of being at one with the Earth. Hot breath on the throat. Snort of triumph. This is right, this is how it is, how it should be. Darkness.
